What is a nakshatra?
Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology — an older and finer division of the zodiac than the 12 signs. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac and is ruled by one of nine planets. Your janma nakshatra is the one your Moon occupied at birth, and it carries special weight: it sets the starting point of your Vimshottari dasha timeline, it is the basis of traditional compatibility matching, and in much of India it matters more than the Sun sign ever has.
Because the Moon moves through the whole zodiac in about 27 days, it spends roughly one day in each nakshatra — which is why your birth date usually determines it, and your birth time decides borderline cases.

What is my nakshatra?
Your janma nakshatra (birth star) is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied when you were born. The sidereal zodiac divides into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and the Moon moves through about one per day. Use the calculator above with your birth date, time, and place.
What is a pada?
Each nakshatra divides into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. Two people with the same nakshatra but different padas have their Moon in different navamsa signs, which colors how the nakshatra expresses.
Is my nakshatra the same as my zodiac sign?
No. Signs cut the zodiac into 12 parts; nakshatras cut it into 27. Each sign contains parts of two or three nakshatras. Your Moon sign and Moon nakshatra are two different coordinates of the same Moon position.
Why does my nakshatra matter?
It sets the starting point of your Vimshottari dasha timeline — the period system Vedic astrology uses to time chapters of life — and it's the basis of traditional compatibility matching and auspicious-date selection.
Can I find my nakshatra without my exact birth time?
Usually yes — the Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra. But if the Moon changed nakshatras on your birth date, the exact hour decides which one is yours. Try a few times in the calculator to see whether your result is sensitive.
