Why your Vedic moon sign is (probably) different
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinoxes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars. Because of the slow wobble of Earth's axis, the two zodiacs have drifted about 24° apart. This gap is called the ayanamsa. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the most widely used standard in India.
The practical consequence: if your Moon sits in the first ~24° of its tropical sign (most positions do), your sidereal Moon lands one sign earlier. A Western "Aries Moon" is usually a Vedic Pisces Moon. Neither is wrong. They're different coordinate systems answering different questions.
Why the Moon outranks the Sun in Vedic astrology
In Jyotish the Moon is the mind: your emotional patterning, instincts, and inner experience. Far more is read from it than from the Sun. Your janma rashi (Moon sign) anchors how transits are read; your Moon's nakshatra sets the starting point of your Vimshottari dasha timeline; and traditional compatibility matching is Moon-based. When someone in India asks "what's your rashi," they mean your Moon sign, not your Sun sign.

The Moon represents the mind. It anchors transit readings, starts the dasha timeline through its nakshatra, and is the basis of compatibility matching. The Sun sign plays a comparatively minor role in Jyotish.
